Just recently, in November, I was walking through a cold autumn Paris and stopped in the local Chinatown, an area where a large number of East Asians live and do business.
Already knowing that I would soon be in Vietnam, I took a closer look at how much Vietnamese cuisine costs in Paris?
And the prices are as follows: any dish - approximately 12-15 euros.
And this is despite the fact that Chinatown is a budget place away from the center; in a classic French restaurant, a meat dish can cost 20 euros or more.
And what about Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, where I am now. Here you can eat a bellyful of meat with a side dish in a simple establishment for... 1.5 euros (35-40 thousand dong).
And even if you go to a Michelin-starred restaurant, even there Vietnamese dishes will cost you 6 euros (150 thousand dong).
Thus, the price difference between Paris and Hanoi for a large portion of prepared food with meat is 8-10 times!
It's hard for me to say what the French feel when they come to their former colony and see such prices.
Well, imagine that you get somewhere where the prices for food are 10 times lower! Can you imagine it? It will seem to you that it is free.
There are a lot of happy smiling "white misters" walking around in the center of Hanoi. They like it here very much, with Western incomes they can feel like real kings here. While in their homeland they, quite possibly, run around and look for discounts and promotions in budget supermarkets.
So far, the level of prices and incomes on our planet varies greatly, depending on the country. And it is unlikely that anything will change in this regard in the coming years.
